Connect UPOS to Your Windows POS Computer: A Simple Guide

What You Need Before You Start

  • A Windows computer with a basic POS system already installed. This is what your store currently uses to take orders and manage sales.

  • UPOS (Universal POS Interface) — This is a special web-based interface that helps unify your POS workflow with more flexibility and voice feedback.

  • A web browser on your Windows computer (like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox).

  • Network access so the computer can connect to the internet or your local network if needed.

Step 1: Understand What UPOS Does

UPOS is a web-based interface designed to help your staff take orders easily with buttons for menu items, sizes, modifiers, and payments. It can talk to your existing POS system to sync orders and payments — but you have to connect it properly.

Think of UPOS as a friendly “remote control” that sits on top of your existing system, improving how orders are taken and tracked.

Step 2: Prepare Your Windows POS Computer

Make sure:

  • Your Windows PC is turned on and logged in.

  • You have access to the web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox).

  • Your existing POS system is running and ready.

Step 3: Run UPOS on Your Windows Computer

  1. Open your preferred web browser.

  2. If you have the UPOS HTML file (the one I gave you), open it directly:

    • Right-click the UPOS HTML file and select Open With > [Your Browser].

    • Or drag and drop the file into your browser window.

  1. UPOS should load and show the grid of buttons with options like “Start Order,” “Add Item,” etc.

Step 4: Connect UPOS to Your Existing POS System

  • Right now, UPOS is running independently in your browser. To link it to your store’s POS system, you’ll need to:

    1. Identify how your current POS accepts input:

      • Does it support external order inputs via APIs?

      • Does it have a way to receive orders from other software?

    2. Set up UPOS to send order data to your POS:

      • This requires a small software integration (often done by a developer).

      • UPOS can be enhanced to send order details (items, sizes, prices) to your POS system’s API (Application Programming Interface).

      • The integration might involve programming, using the existing POS’s API or SDK.

Step 5: Using UPOS with Your Current System

  • Once connected (through API integration):

    • When you press buttons in UPOS (like adding a burger or a drink), those orders will be sent automatically to your POS system, just like they were entered directly there.

    • Payments processed via UPOS will also update your POS sales.

  • If your POS system does not have an API, you can use UPOS as a manual order-taking tool, then enter orders manually into your POS until integration is possible.

Step 6: Training Staff to Use UPOS

  • Staff should start by clicking “Start Order” in UPOS.

  • Select whether the order is TOGO or DINE-IN.

  • Add items by selecting categories (drink, side, entree).

  • Choose sizes and modifiers.

  • Use subtotal to check the running total.

  • When ready, complete payment with cash or card buttons.

  • To cancel an order, use the Cancel Order button.

  • UPOS will speak instructions and confirmations to assist staff..

Step 7: Troubleshooting and Next Steps

  • If orders don’t appear in your POS system, it means the integration isn’t set up yet.

  • You may need help from an IT person or developer to connect UPOS with your POS software.

  • UPOS can be customized to fit your menu and workflow.

  • Using UPOS can speed up order taking, reduce errors, and improve customer service.
